Steel vs. Aluminum Dock Boards

Both materials have a place. Use this quick comparison to start your selection — the right answer usually depends on cycle frequency, environment, and capacity.

Steel Dock Boards

  • Durability
Stronger and more resistant to bending or warping than aluminum. Suited for heavy-duty, high-traffic dock environments.
  • Higher capacity
Steel supports higher weight ratings at similar size and thickness than aluminum — the right pick for heavy loads.
  • Longer lifespan
Greater durability translates to longer service life and lower replacement frequency over time.
  • Impact resistance
More resistant to dent or deformation from heavy load drops and forklift impacts during loading.
  • Best for
Multi-shift docks, heavy forklifts, and below-dock loading conditions.

Aluminum Dock Boards

  • Lightweight
Significantly lighter than steel. Easier to handle, reposition, and store — especially for manual deployment.
  • Corrosion resistant
Naturally resists rust and corrosion. Strong choice for outdoor docks, salt-air environments, or wet conditions.
  • Non-sparking
Won't spark when struck or scraped — safer in facilities handling flammable materials or gases.
  • Low maintenance
No painting or rust-prevention coating required. Lower ongoing upkeep cost than painted steel.
  • Best for
Lower-cycle docks, lighter loads, outdoor exposure, and where weight handling matters.
